The Year of the Pig

Updated: Sep 30, 2020

Help celebrate the Year of the Pig by raising awareness about the very animal we’re honoring! Director, Allison Argo, collaborated with Chinese filmmaker Jian Yi, to create a short animated film about the inhumane conditions endured by pigs.

The story takes place in China, but it could unfold anywhere in the world. Although China is the world’s largest consumer of pork, most Chinese people have never seen a pig. This is because most pigs are kept in factory farms, some in high rises, packed to max capacity, waiting to be turned into pork. The film follows “Piggy” as he goes in search of pig friends, only to find them crammed together, panicked in a high rise factory farm. The film highlights the increased industrialization of pig farming, which leads to an even greater mistreatment of pigs and other farmed animals. In this Year of the Pig, the film encourages viewers to think about where their food comes from, and how it affects those we take for granted. Ironically, most of the pigs born during the Year of the Pig, won’t live to see the end of it. Pigs are commonly taken to the slaughterhouse at six to eight months old. Like Piggy’s owner, if we all wish hard and work for change, in 12 years, the next Year of the Pig, these unethical treatments could be eradicated worldwide.

The short premiered in China in February for the Lantern Festival, and is now available with English narration and English subtitles.
